Not only have we been working hard on a stack of new models we've also been adding new features to them. We told you about the texture swapping and graffiti that has been applied to the EWS liveried Sea Urchins on Wednesday and are taking the opportunity to share the special features of the Rebodied HTV hoppers today.

You should have noticed from the four pictures above that there are a selection of subtly different data panels applied to the wagons. These panels are applied at random as the wagons are placed in the game and when mixed in with the different weathering levels and liveries produces a nicely mixed rake of wagons.

However, what if you're placing a nice neat row of ex-works wagons? We would expect them all to be lettered the same. This is why we have also included the option to override the randomisation of the data panels if you wish in the Scenario Editor by prefixing the wagon number with a code to choose the panel you want.

In addition to this automatic ability to mix things up a bit we've also developed something that we're calling 'Intelligent Tail Lamps'. In the past we have stuck with producing discrete rear versions of wagons fitted with a tail lamp as we didn't feel that any of the other solutions that had been developed really gave the level of control we wanted.

That was until one of our testers pushed the issue again and a chance comment sparked an idea. With a little bit inspiration, a fair amount of sweat and frustration and possibly a little swearing we have produced the solution that is quoted from the manual below.

The key features of our ‘intelligent’ tail lamp are:

  • Player services will display a lamp at the rear end and this will move up and down the train as vehicles are coupled/uncoupled.
  • AI services will display a lamp at rear and this should move up and down as vehicles are added or removed in scenarios
  • Loose consists should not display any lamps - including portions detached from Player and AI services
  • Lamps can be prevented from showing by adding a N prefix to the vehicle number in the scenario editor either before or after the decal override if this is used
  • Lamps can be forced to appear in a similar manner by using a Y prefix.
  • AI services with a Service Class of ‘Special’ will not display a lamp and this needs to be forced to appear with a prefix
  • Loose consists are treated by Train Simulator as ‘Special’, if you wish a tail lamp to appear on one end (or indeed both ends) of such a consist you will need to force it to appear by adding a Y prefix to the relevant wagon(s).
  • In a free roam scenario, selecting a consist with a Special type to become the player service will enable the lamps as per a normal service.
  • In circumstances where the automatic display of a tail lamp is not desired, for example during shunting manoeuvres in a yard, adding a prefix of N to the vehicle number will prevent a tail lamp from being displayed on that vehicle.
  • Conversely, if a tail lamp is required to be displayed and this does not happen automatically, for example a loose consist left in a siding, adding a prefix of Y will force a tail lamp to be displayed on the outer end of that wagon.

When adding prefixes for lamp control and decal overriding the order of those prefixes does not matter.

Clean HEA Hoppers

These have been sitting quietly for a couple of days so it seemed a good idea to finally share them.

In a bid to increase the maximum speed of the HBA hoppers and following a number of trials the last 200 were built with Bruninghaus springs rather than the 13 leaf friction link suspension originally fitted which allowed the maximum speed to be raised to 75mph so the hoppers could work in the fastest Speedlink trains. The modification was successful and the majority of the friction link fitted HBAs were subsequently rebuilt in line with the last 200 hoppers.

The decision to recode the modified wagons with the HEA TOPS code was made in late 1981 which means that from 1979 - 1981 the last 200 hoppers and any of the early conversions ran with Bruninghaus springs and the TOPS code HBA.

The HBA set

The main models in 'clean' textures for the HBA hoppers are now finished. There are two different shapes, each in two contrasting liveries.

Painted Urchin

The majority of time since the release of the VDA vans has been spent (other than taking a bit of a break) getting the ZCA Sea Urchin completed and ready for master shapes to be given the once over by the testers.

The model shown is just about ready for a final check before the different versions are created, all that's needed is the magic to make that tail lamp flash!

Speaking of tail lamps, this is now the fourth different model we've created and all by chance for this one. An offhand comment from one of the team following the preview of the original lamp modelled set in motion a fortunate series of events. 

The original comment was along the lines of "I hope we're going to include the BR flashing tail lamp" and received a reply of "That's what I've done". "Oh no", comes the reply, "They were bigger". Not a popular comment to make after the difficulty of finding enough references for (what's turned out to be) a mark 3 lamp!

By total chance in less than 24 hours an email arrived from the same team member that he'd got pictures and measurements of a BR lamp and everything that was needed to create the lamp in the screenshot. Now all that's needed is simulate the weight of the thing as he remarked "It was just as heavy as I remember them!"

Now, should we track down a mark 2 lamp just to complete the set ...?

Brake Van Variety

The dia. 1/507 brake vans included in the VDA vans stock pack for Railworks were completed today and sent off to the testers.

This monster post shows all four variations to be included: bauxite and yellow clean; bauxite and yellow weathered; Railfreight red and grey clean and Railfreight red and grey weathered.

Each of these variants comes with 3 tail lamps (unfitted trains), 1 tail lamp (fully fitted trains) and without any lamps plus smoking and non smoking versions of the above.

Northern Lights?

A quick walk out at dusk last night found this standard dia 1/507 20T brake van with a full set of lamps for an unfittted train on the rear of a local trip working.

Taking a Railfreight Brake

Ok, the plan was to get Railfreight flame red and grey livery on the dia. 1/507 brake van for RailWorks and then get the models out to the testers.

What actually happened was the livery was applied and in the final stages of tweaking when an idea popped into my head - 'It might be a good idea to add side lamps for working trains without continuous brake'. The results can be seen above!

At the present time the side lamps have holding textures in place so the flat appearance and red lens will disappear in future along with the test coupling. The next modelling session should see the lamps baked and given proper textures and the coupling sorted too so these can go off to the testers while final versions of the VDAs are compiled.
